Jacksonville, Florida: Timing is everything. Luckily, we arrived in Jacksonville, to stay with Shauna and Mark, and their beautiful 3 month old, Carter Douglas Hamilton (can you get any more Presidential than that?) who had just gotten power back a few days earlier following Hurricane Charlie’s visit. We were glad to be staying with such close friends since we had a very ambitious itinerary over the next few weeks. We arrived in Jacksonville on Thursday evening to a delicious home cooked meal by Shauna. The following morning, Mike got on a plane to Vegas at 6:00 am to go to Da-Man’s Bachelor Party, and Ruthie headed to New York for Bubba’s and Samantha’s wedding on the Jersey Shore, taking Sarah Seroussi as her date. After great weekends on both ends of the country, Ruthie returned to Jacksonville that Sunday and Mike (in a slightly more disheveled state) on Monday, after a red eye. We stayed with Shauna and Mark until Wednesday morning, when we caught a 6:00 am flight to Portland, Oregon for Dave Aman and Michelle’s wedding (which was a blast), and then the red eyed back to Jacksonville the following Tuesday morning. During our three or four days in Jacksonville, we checked out the San Marco and Avalon neighborhoods, as well as the Jacksonville beaches, specifically, Neptune Beach. Our beach day began as an overcast, windy, but 80 degree day, and quickly became the most torrential downpour we have ever been in, with probably 40 mph winds, and 5 inches of water flooding the streets within 20 minutes. For about 10 of those very rainy and windy minutes, we stubbornly sat in our beach chairs convinced the storm was just passing by. When the clouds become more ominous, it started raining even harder, the wind picked up even more, and a very drunk man fell (or got blown) out of the lifeguard chair, we decided to call it quits and run for the car, although we did stop to take some pretty funny pictures along the way. Some other highlights were the Pig Barbeque on the east side of Jacksonville, the Pizza Palace in San Marco, and of course, the Chamberlain Room (located at Casa de Shauna and Marc), which featured a really, really comfy bed, and some interesting facts on Lieutenant Colonel Joshua Chamberlain who fought on the Union side in the Civil War (or the “War of Northern Aggression,” as some Southerners like to call it).
