New Orleans, Louisiana After checking into our bed and breakfast in New Orleans, the Degas House (Edgar Degas and his two brothers lived there for about 4 months in 1874 and it is said that Degas’ impressionist style first showed itself from paintings done there), we met Malcolm and Adam at the Whiskey Blue Bar in the W Hotel just outside of the French Quarter. A few drinks later, we hit the Foundation Room at the House of Blues, and then went to check out Malcolm’s awesome pad in the French Quarter, traveling to all of these destinations in a limo, courtesy of Malcolm. Malcolm and Adam actually styled us all weekend – much thanks go out to the two of them! Since Mike had never been to New Orleans, we spent the next day walking around the French Quarter, had a beignet at Café Dumond, a drink at Pat O’Briens, and rode the trolley down St. Charles Street. Dinner that evening was with Malcolm, Adam and their friends Kathleen and Gina at Muriel’s in the French Quarter (although it is a bit of a tourist destination, the food was delicious), followed by an early night since we had all been out so late the evening before. Before we left town, we took advantage of our complementary tour of the Degas House, and learned a great deal about Edgar Degas, the bed and breakfast, New Orleans history, and Carl, our tour guide, who apparently was a Catholic Priest turned Executive Director of the Chicago ACLU, turned New Orleans historian/tour guide. We plan to call Carl the next time we are in New Orleans for a tour of the St. Louis Cemetery, Antoine’s Restaurant, and the French Quarter, to name a few tourist spots he covers. On our way out of town, w had burgers at this great bar/restaurant on Esplanade called Port of Call, which we highly recommend. With its rich culture, color and history, New Orleans is one of our favorite cities thus far (and we just scratched at its surface)!
