Lake Placid, New York: After spending that afternoon relaxing in Saratoga with Ruthie’s mom, we headed north with no real agenda except a hike on the following day in Lake Placid, home of the 1980 Olympic Games. We planned to return to Gloversville via with a few stops along the way, including one in Wells, and one at Pecks Lake (just outside of Gloversville, in the Adirondaks) to stay with Mike Degnan and Jackie. About half way up however, we decided to keep heading north into Montreal and then down through Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, and down the coast of New England. Lake Placid was a first for Mike (it’s only about 2 ½ - 3 hours from where Ruthie grew up). It’s pretty cool to see the huge ski jumps without snow, which makes them look even scarier. And, though we didn’t go in, it felt pretty historical to see the arena where the US beat the Soviets in hockey in the 1980 Olympics. The town itself has a sort of European ski town feel, and seems to be developed just the right amount. We ended up having a great evening, walking around the town, doing a little shopping, having some dinner and cocktails and watching the Olympics. By then it was late, so we got our second motel of the trip - the Mountain Inn, which had a beautiful view of Mirror Lake (Lake Placid is located upon the shores of Mirror Lake and Lake Placid), and the owner was very nice. After a little sidewalk breakfast the next morning, we headed for Canada.
