PLAYA DE PONELOYA, NICARAGUA
January 31, 2005

Just an hour west of Leon is a beautiful little beach town called Poneloya.  While it apparently draws a crown on the weekend, it is a virtual ghost town during the week, which is what we were in the mood for.  While it is not an ideal surf destination due to what are apaprently very dangerous rip currents, as well as an abundance of big sharp rocks, there are areas to swim and surf, though nowhere to rent a board.  At any rate, just walking the beach was excellent.  While exploring we came across this great old hotel on a cliff which looks to have been abandoned 30-40 years ago.  It had a beautiful pool, huge balconies, and some bars cut into the cliff side.  We couldn't help thinking it would be a great spot to restore and market.  Come to think of it, the whole town has the look of a place that was very prosperous and popular before the revolution, and has declined ever since.  Still though, it is very beautiful and relaxing.  The kind of place where you randomly see a bull wandering on the sand down by the ocean.  In fact, we got  a pretty good picture of just such a bull at sunset. The food was also pretty good.  Mike particularly like the whole red snapper he had for dinner.
