Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Spring Break 2004 (part two)! Myrtle Beach is sort of like Virginia Beach, with a splash of Coney Island. We got there during the early evening on Labor Day and the town was virtually deserted. This, coupled with the cloudy, windy and drizzly weather (side effects of the tropical storms ravaging the south east in the wake of the hurricanes, of which, thankfully, we have managed to stay North and East), gave it almost an eerie feel. Dinner was burgers and $2 beers at the Gilligans which is your typical beach themed college party trap (complete with Karaoke), but it was now almost empty, but the Caribbean music was still at deafening decibels. Actually, it was OK, and the burgers were awesome. After a nightcap at a hole in the wall with internet access, and Mark, the Grateful Dead sound engineer, we got a $28 motel room at the Starship Motel. Don’t ask - let’s just say we had a few unwelcome “roommates.” Oh well, the couple running the place was very nice, but the accommodations lacked a certain something. We probably won’t be back to Myrtle Beach until we go to college in our next life.
