Mt. Rushmore, South Dakota We left Wind Cave around 6:00 pm and drove for about 2 hours through Custer State Park and the Black Hills to Mt. Rushmore. Along the way, we saw the biggest bison we’d ever seen – we mean huge – hanging out on the side of the road, some more deer, and some great rock formations. The Black Hills are really pretty, and well worth a visit, not to mention, there is a great view of Mt. Rushmore as you descend out of the hills, round a bend, and exit this rock tunnel, which makes the drive worth it for that reason alone. Arriving at Rushmore just before sunset, we took some pictures, ate dinner and more importantly, had the best blizzard (with vanilla frozen yogurt, oreo cookie crumbs and butterfinger toppings) and best “Rushmore Raspberry and Strawberry Sorbet” we’ve ever had. However, the highlight of this stop was definitely the lighting ceremony just after sunset. Following a ranger talk, and a movie explaining why Gutzon (the Sculpturer) chose George Washington (formation), Thomas Jefferson (expansion), Abe Lincoln (preservation), and Teddy Roosevelt (development) as the four Presidents for Rushmore to represent his tribute to democracy and freedom, the ranger lit up the faces, and then paid tribute to current and former servicemen and women. It was a very nice ceremony, and people got a little teary eyed.
