DALLAS

Dallas, Texas Dallas, for us, can be summed up in various two word combinations: Dealey Plaza; Za Za, Nick & Sams, Mike’s Birthday, Dunham & Robin, and Dragon Fly. In brief, since it was Mike’s 30th Birthday during our visit there, we stayed at ZaZa, an awesome hotel in Dallas’ Uptown neighborhood. This area, although “yuppified,” is very cute; lots of great shopping, restaurants, bars and art galleries all in walking distance of one another. As for the ZaZa, the outside of the hotel is very Orange County, but the inside is very LA. The rooms, the service, the pool, and the restaurant/bar, Dragon Fly, were all excellent, especially the food at Dragon Fly. We further spoiled ourselves (well, so we thought, until Dunham spoiled us instead – thanks again Dunham!) by dining with Dunham (a.k.a. C.Dunham Biles) and Robin at Nick & Sam’s (a fantastic steakhouse near ZaZa) on Mike’s actual birthday. The food, service and décor were all fabulous, as was Dunham’s place, and his and Robin’s hospitality. The other highlight of our stay in Dallas was without a doubt Dealey Plaza, the site where John Fitzgerald Kennedy (“JFK”) was assassinated on November 22, 1963, while riding in an open convertible with his wife Jackie O and Governor and Nellie Connolly on the way to address a group of folks at the Trade Mart. Ironically, literally minutes before JFK was shot, in response to the significant number of people who had turned out to see the President and Jackie O, Nellie Connolly had turned to the President and said, “You see Mr. President, you can’t say Dallas doesn’t love you.” It’s very sad. There is a memorial to JFK just outside of Dealey Plaza, and some conspiracy theorists hanging out in the Plaza, by the infamous Grassy Knoll and wood fence and wall where the supposed third or fourth shot came from. These guys have built a pretty good case for themselves over the years, and are very willing to chat with you about their theories, as well as provide literature backing them up. You should also definitely check out the Sixth Floor Museum in the Texas School Book Depository Building, which is appropriately located on the sixth floor of the building that Lee Harvey Oswald allegedly fired those fatal shots. The museum provides a lot of information on the assassination, as well as tracing the history of President Kennedy’s rise and (sudden and tragic) fall. It is really interesting, not only for someone like Ruthie, who did not know much about the assassination, but also for those like Mike, who apparently was a bit of a conspiracy theorist himself when he was in 9th grade or somewhere there abouts. Dealey Plaza is interesting in that not only is it the spot where JFK was assassinated, but it is also the birthplace of Dallas and site of Dallas’ first trading post. As such, the area is often referred to as both a “cradle and a grave.” There is a lot of fascinating history here, and it is definitely worth checking out, as is the rest of downtown Dallas.
