Virginia Beach, Virginia:

	Deciding that Chincataeque would have to wait until another trip, we headed south to Virginia Beach.  The sky was rapidly clouding, but we still had optimist dreams of a cheap hotel and a sunny beach to lie on all day.  About two thirds down, however, we noticed that we were going to drive right by Yorktown. We’re both getting pretty addicted to the history element of this trip, and who could resist the very battlefield where American independence was finally secured in October, 1781.

	Yorktown is part of Colonial National Historic Park, along with the towns of Williamsburg (former capitol of Virginia and home of William and Mary College and Busch Gardens) and Jamestown (the first settlement in the United States), and all of them are located within 23 miles of one another, connected by the Colonial Parkway.  As for Yorktown, it is still a functioning town on the York River, where it dumps into the Chesapeake Bay (the county government still meets in the original courthouse built nearly 300 years ago). It features most of its original buildings, some of which even have “scars” remaining from sieges during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars (e.g., cannons embedded in the side of stone houses, and indentation marks where other cannons hit the house).  The visitor center has George Washington’s original field tents, and a replica of one of Lord Cornwallis’ (from the British Army) ships, which he purposely sunk as a blockade off of the coast during the battle.  As an added plus, you can walk down “Tobacco Road,” which was apparently the lifeblood tobacco route in colonial Virginia (though it is now essentially a hiking trail) and even check out wild tobacco, which grows all around that area today.

	After our history lesson, we headed to Virginia Beach. Imagine an MTV Spring Break town and you are there - pretty fun place though.  There were 4 different stages for bands, a ready made party on every corner, and we actually found pretty good Mexican food and margaritas at the Guadalajara Grill.  Since Holiday Inns and Days Inns were running about 200-250 a night for a single room with a double bed, we toyed with the idea of driving to North Carolina after dinner.  Then, we stumbled across old man Bill on a lawn chair in front of his “house,” literally just off the beach, and rented us a nice clean room at bargain basement prices.  Happy Labor Day!!
