Gloversville and Saratoga, New York: The plan was to check out Niagara Falls on the way to Gloversville, which is Ruthie’s home town in upstate New York, about 55 minutes Northwest of Albany. Things got a little backed up and we had to skip it on account of darkness. Oh well, Ruthie’s seen it, and we’ll get back there some day. We ended up rolling in at about 12:30 am, and stopped in at Al Unger and Krista’s house, who were having a fantasy football draft party with a bunch of Ruthie’s high school buddies who were in town that weekend. Fun was had by all, even when the festivities deteriorated into Kerry v. Bush. We had a bit of a scare when we got to Ruthie’s parents house, because Kita the Dog wouldn’t wake up and appeared to be hardly breathing. Turns out, she is just a very tired, and pretty sick 14 year old dog. She’s still got lots of spirit though, and seemed to enjoy our company the rest of the weekend, though at half speed. The next morning, after having breakfast with Ruthie’s, we headed to the horse track at Saratoga. Great place by the way if you’ve never been. It’s got an old movie feel to it, and is one of the oldest tracks in the US. You can pay $6, and go into the clubhouse, or $3, and picnic on the lawn. Either way, you have access to the betting booths, and the race track, so we did the latter, along with a bunch of Ruthie’s High School crowd who was home for the weekend. They are pretty much the type of guys, and girls, that Mike went to high school with as well, so he’s usually as excited as she is to see them all. Although we did not win big bucks, we won enough to pay for the day’s food and drink. That’s winning to us! That evening, we has dinner with Ruthie’s parents, and some quality family time, then we checked out Collateral. It’s a pretty good movie. Cool story, cool looking, and Tom Cruise is a good villain. Two thumbs up. We spent Sunday morning sleeping late (er than normal), and then spent the afternoon having lunch with Ruthie’s parents, culling through old books and antiques at their and Ruthie’s late Grandma’s house. That evening and next morning were spent at Jo Christine and Clint’s house visiting and meeting the tornado which is their children: Clint Jr., Alex, and Christopher. If you could hook a power generator to these kids you’d be rich. Mike spent the better part of the morning in physical combat with the threesome, and hadn’t had so much fun since his own brother and sister were that age. He even rode the motorized mini car!
