New York City, New York Unlike most other visits in NYC, where we have tons of people to see, a lot of folks were out of town this trip. So, after checking into our hotel – Morgans – on 37th and Madison (Ian Shrager’s first in his line of boutique hotels, done around 1984), we headed out for a nice big Italian dinner in the West Village, got some drinks, and called it an “early” night. The next day, we were going to switch hotels, as we had not been all that impressed with ours thus far. While the service was excellent, and the bar and restaurant (Asia de Cuba) were really cool, the room was really tiny, and a bunch of its accoutrements were malfunctioning. To its credit, the hotel is undergoing a renovation, and will likely be gorgeous in a few years. They just had not hit our floor yet, and you could tell. However, when we very nicely pointed out several of the problems with our room, and indicated we were going to switch hotels, the manager of the hotel graciously offered to upgrade us to this awesome suite. Although it also had not been renovated yet (so the décor was still a little outdate), it was a great space, with lots of French doors leading out to large balconies, with great views, including one of the Empire State Building, just a few blocks away, and this time, everything worked. Our second night at Morgans was a much better experience, and the free breakfast each morning at Asia de Cuba didn’t hurt. Our second day in NY dawned bright and beautiful, so we headed for Central Park for a few hours, had a late lunch in Bryant Park and then Ruthie went to get her nails done, while Mike took full advantage of our fancy new room. That evening, we met Marshall and Lisa at Pier 81, where we picked up the Circle Island Sunset Cruise, had some cocktails, and checked out NY and the Statue of Liberty from a new and unique vantage point. And, we caught a great sunset to boot. After a late dinner at the Madrigal Grill in the East Village, where we spied Alan Cumming (a.k.a. Night Crawler from X Men 2), and, since only poor Marshall had to work the next day, we went for a few drinks at the Ace Bar before heading back to the hotel. We left for Philadelphia after a yummy breakfast the next morning.
